MSNBC’s O’Donnell: Electoral College ‘most astonishing institution ever imposed’ on democracy

MSNBC presenter Lawrence O’Donnell said on Thursday’s “The Last Word” that the Electoral College is “the most surprising institution ever imposed on so-called democracy.”

O’Donnell said: “The most clown British Prime Minister of our lives today has announced his embarrassing resignation while awaiting the election of his successor, and by doing so, he has shown once again that the British parliamentary system is superior to that chosen by our founders. those who think they are smarter. And the decision of the presidents we know today to imprison the country for a fixed term of four years for partisan reasons cannot be changed, no matter what crimes they are convicted of. The founders’ obsession with avoiding any English in government led them to create the most baffling institution supposedly imposed on democracy, the Electoral College. The Electoral College is the only reason to worry about the integrity of the next presidential election. Without the Electoral College, it’s fine. The Electoral College is one of many crimes committed by the Founders against democracy.”

“Other crimes against the founders’ democracy include two state senators, preventing anyone from voting except for a small percentage of white men, and preventing anyone from voting for United States Senators. Its founders were experiments in democracy. Not really believing in democracy. They are novices and democracies. Most of the barriers to democracy they put in the Constitution have been removed. Women are now allowed to vote. Blacks are allowed to vote. Now at least everyone has something to say, a theoretical one.”
