Mexican President Andres Manuel López Obrador has sparked controversy over protecting his country’s soldiers after a video showed them withdrawing from a convoy of cartel members. The president said the escape saved the lives of the cartel fighters.
The problem arose this week when the Mexican military announced that it was conducting an operation in Michoacán. Hours later, a video went viral showing cartel groups riding SUVs chasing soldiers from Nueva, Italy.
Shortly after, López Obrador said at a press conference that they must protect their federal troops, but they must also protect members of criminal organizations.
“We deal with elements of the Armed Forces, Defense, National Guard, but we are also interested in integrators of gangs. They’re human, that’s a separate policy, says President Lopez Obrador.

“They’re human, that’s a different policy, a completely different policy,” said the President. “For me, that’s a responsible attitude.”
The comments drew criticism from all walks of Mexican society, López Obrador.
didjo @lopezobradador_ The one who took the lives of criminals because he was a “human child”. Killing, harassing, undermining, killing women and children, wanting all peoples etc. The Lord has lost all traces of “humanity”. In two years you will go and there will be no country left for us

Adrian LeBaron, whose daughter and grandchildren were killed, said, “Sir, all traces of humanity have lost theirs, who killed women and children, raped, maimed, killed women and children, burned the whole city.” . “You’ll be gone in two years, don’t leave the country with impunity.”
On Friday morning, López Obrador doubled down on his comments, saying that critics attacked him for his life-saving comments.
President López Obrador reiterated what he said yesterday that the Armed Forces are concerned with the lives of criminals.
Referring to the criticism he received, “How do we want someone to lose their life?” he asked.
