Muslim students riot to defend suspects accused of murdering Nigerian Christian woman

Students in northern Nigeria rioted this weekend after the arrest of two Muslims accused of brutally murdering a Christian university student for alleged blasphemy.

On Thursday, at Shehu Shagari Teachers College in Sokoto state, a group of Muslim students stoned, beaten and burned the body of Hausa Christian Deborah Yakubu after she asked her colleagues to stop posting religious content on Student WhatsApp. Group.

After the police arrested two Muslim students and began searching for other suspects who appeared in the social media lynching footage, hundreds of students took to the streets, set fires and protested for their release by the police.

Aljazeera reported that students also surrounded the palace of Sultan Muhammadu Saad Abubakar, who condemned the murder and demanded that those responsible be brought to justice.

“This is more of a crowd riot of young men and women demanding the release of two people arrested in connection with the murder of a Christian student,” Sokoto resident Abraham Arquilla told AFP.

Arquilla, who witnessed the protests, said the majority “also demanded that the police stop searching for those found to be involved in the murders”.

As protests intensified on Saturday, Sokotu Governor Aminu Tambuwal imposed an “immediately effective” 24-hour curfew to restore order and security in the region.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari expressed regret over Yakubu’s lynching on May 13, insisting that investigations into allegations of blasphemy should be conducted by the appropriate authorities.

“Muslims around the world demand respect for the Holy Prophets, including Jesus (peace be upon him) and Muhammad (pbuh). [sic]Buhari said in a statement.

But where there are violations, as in this case, the law does not allow anyone to take matters into their own hands.”

“Furthermore, religious people advise that an unbeliever should judge the actions of others. “When such issues arise, the constitutional authority should be allowed to deal with it,” he said.

“No one in this country has the right to take the law into their own hands. “Violence does not solve any problem,” he said.
