A technical report released Wednesday showed that fake accounts make up about half of the followers of President Joe Biden’s personal account on Twitter.
The report comes as US billionaire Ilan Musk has suspended the $ 44 billion purchase of the website due to what it calls “concerns about unrealistic platform accounts.”
Fake accounts that are not used by real people are used to increase the number of followers of some characters or to increase interaction and influence public opinion.
Some of these accounts were created to provide automated data on some items, such as the stock market and traffic, while others were created to spread false or misleading news or even financial fraud.
An analysis of the Spark Toro platform shows that fake or inactive accounts make up about 11 million followers on the president’s personal account, or about 49.3 percent of the White House’s male followers.
Former United States President Barack Obama was the first to use the @POTUS account to communicate directly with millions of Americans.
As soon as Obama left, the account was transferred to his successor, Donald Trump, while Obama’s account was archived as “@POTUS44”.
Biden’s “@JoeBiden” profile has 32 million followers, but many of them are not active or fake accounts.
According to the Daily Mail, the number of fake followers in Joe Biden’s personal account, which is 14.6 million, is more than the official account of the president provided by the White House.
Twitter says it has 229 million daily visitors, explaining that the number of fake or random accounts does not exceed 5% of the total.
But Musk questioned the numbers, claiming that unrealistic accounts make up at least 20 percent, and then accused the platform’s CEO, Parag Agarwal, of refusing to provide 5 percent approval.
Musk explained that he offered to buy Twitter based on the fact that the percentage of fake accounts did not exceed 5%.
