The US Department of Justice said a US citizen and four Chinese intelligence officials are accused of spying on dissidents, human rights activists and democracy activists living in the US.

The prosecution found that Wang Shujun of Queens, New York, used his position in the overseas Chinese communities, dissidents and defectors to collect information about their activities for the Chinese Ministry of State Security.

According to the Ministry of Justice, Wang, 73, was arrested on March 16 and will face trial at a later date. It added that officials from China’s Ministry of State Security, the four defendants are still on the run. The indictment was announced Tuesday in federal court in Brooklyn.

The indictment adds that Wang has been providing information to China’s Ministry of State Security since at least 2011, noting that his officials instructed him to target pro-democracy activists from Hong Kong, advocates of Taiwan independence, Uighur issues and Tibetan activists.
