The UN has criticized the removal of the independent human rights commission in Afghanistan

Today, Thursday, the United Nations criticized the Taliban’s removal of the Independent Human Rights Commission in Afghanistan.

UN human rights coordinator Michelle Bachelet said she was “shocked” by the decision to disband the Independent Human Rights Commission, announced Tuesday.

“The Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission has done extraordinary work over the years in very difficult conditions, emphasizing the human rights of all Afghans, including victims from all sides of the conflict.”

“The commission has become a strong voice and trusted partner for human rights, and its loss would be a very reactionary step for all Afghan and Afghan civil society,” he said.

Since the Taliban seized power in August, radical Islamists have shut down many institutions protecting Afghan freedoms, including the Election Commission and the Women’s Ministry.

The commission’s work, which includes documenting civilian casualties in the twenty -year war in Afghanistan, came to a halt when the Taliban overthrew the U.S. -backed government last year and senior officials of the organization fled the country.
