European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell confirmed that “the bloc plans to soon reach a trilateral agreement on liquefied natural gas with Israel and Egypt as part of efforts to end dependence on Russia.”
In a social media statement, he explained: “In terms of supply diversification, the European Commission and the United States have already agreed on additional LNG supplies. We are also working with Canada on potential LNG and hydrogen supplies, and the European Union is planning a trilateral agreement with Israel and Egypt for LNG supplies before the summer.
Earlier in the press it was reported that the European Union is seeking to intensify cooperation with African countries from the west of the continent to replace gas imports from Russia, in addition to efforts to sign a memorandum of understanding with Egypt and Israel. It is noteworthy that the EU has imposed a number of sanctions against Russia against the backdrop of its special forces operation in Ukraine, and the EU countries are studying the sixth package of sanctions, which includes an embargo on Russian oil, but the decision does not have the support of all countries. Moscow has previously warned that ditching Russian oil and gas would have dire consequences for the economies of Europe and the world.
