Oscar Lafontaine, former leader of Germany’s Social Democratic Party, said the crisis in Ukraine erupted because Washington and NATO ignored Russia’s security interests.
In an interview with Junge Welt, he added: “Moscow is talking about the impossibility of Ukraine joining NATO for 20 years. It emphasizes that US missiles should not be deployed on the Ukraine-Russia border. ”
The politician recalled the crisis in the Caribbean, comparing Ukraine and Cuba.
“The argument that each country can decide for itself which alliance to join is fundamentally wrong. Everyone knows that the United States will never allow Cuba to enter into a military alliance with Russia or with the United States to place Russian missiles on the border with Mexico or Canada. ”Lafontaine continued.
Lafontaine, who expressed his opposition to unilateral sanctions against Russia, announced that German companies had lost their competitiveness due to restrictions. “We were shooting in the foot,” he said.
Lafontaine criticized Washington’s decision to allocate $ 40 billion to Kyiv authorities, and said it would only prolong the crisis.
