On Saturday, Michigan State Police announced that a second person died as a result of a rare tornado that hit a small residential area in the north of the state.
Lieutenant Derek Carroll said the deceased lived in his 70s in a mobile home park.
In Gaylord, a city of about 4,200 people about 370 miles northwest of Detroit, the storm hit at 3:45 pm Friday.
More than 40 people were injured in the storm.
Nottingham Park, where the trailer is located, was among the first areas hit by the storm, Carroll said.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer declared a state of emergency in Otsego County, freeing up more state resources for the county.
High spring winds are rare in the region, especially in the early part of the season where lakes are very cold, as a result of the Great Lakes absorbing storm energy, said Jim Keysor, a meteorologist at the National Weather Agency in Gaylord.
“Many of the children and teenagers who have lived in Gaylord their entire lives have never experienced bad weather,” he said.
