Today, Thursday, the United Nations urged the parties to the conflict in Yemen to extend the current ceasefire that will end next week.
“We have seen the positive effects of the ceasefire on the daily lives of Yemeni people,” Hans Grundberg, the United Nations Special Envoy to Yemen, said in a statement.
“The parties must renew the ceasefire to ensure the continuation and enhancement of these benefits for the people of Yemen, who have suffered for more than seven years as a result of the war,” Grundberg said. Breaking the cycle of violence and past suffering to move towards a peaceful future in Yemen. The parties should take advantage of this opportunity.
Grundberg’s remarks came as consultations began in Jordan’s capital Amman between representatives of the recognized international Yemeni government (which controls the capital Sanaa) and the Houthi on opening roads in the south- western Yemeni city of Taiz.
On the second day of April, a two-month ceasefire by the UN took effect. The agreement includes allowing commercial flights from Sanaa International Airport, which has only been open to assist with flights since 2016 and represents a rare glimmer of hope in combat after a devastating war.
