“Why only in America?” Senator Ted Cruz cancels interview on gun law

US Senator Ted Cruz, one of the most prominent Republicans to oppose gun restrictions, walked out of an interview with a British journalist after several questions he called “political.”

Cruz was taking part in a vigil for the victims of the Uvalde massacre, where an 18-year-old man shot and killed 19 children and two adults, when Sky News journalist Mark Stone approached him. Asked by Stone if this would not be the time to move forward with a legislative reform on the issue of weapons, Cruz considered that it is a “political” issue.

The interview continued, with the senator reacting with increasing disgust at the journalist’s insistence, who continued to question whether there should be more gun control measures. “None of the Democrat proposals would have prevented this,” Ted Cruz continued.

Until Stone questions him as follows: “Why does this only happen in your country? Why only in the United States? Why is this American exceptionalism so horrible? Ted Cruz is visibly upset and says that he regrets what the journalist considers “horrible American exceptionalism.” “You have your political agenda. God love him,” he replies, before abruptly leaving the interview.

Ted Cruz is one of the Republican senators who has clearly opposed proposals for greater pre-screening of gun buyers. After this attack in Texas, Cruz re-emphasized that he believes it is a mental health issue and not a gun issue.

This Thursday, the place Axios published a list of donations made by pro-gun lobbying organizations to US congressmen. Ted Cruz is at the top of the list with nearly half a million dollars in donations.

Cruz will be one of the speakers at the annual conference of the National Rifle Association (NRA), the largest pro-gun organization in the US, taking place this weekend. He also attended an NRA event this Friday for Texas Governor Greg Abbott. The latter, however, announced that in the end he would not attend the meeting, opting instead to visit the city of Uvalde again, where the shooting took place. However, he does keep a pre-recorded video message for the NRA.

This will be Abbott’s second visit to Uvalde after Tuesday’s attack. On the first visit, as the Houston Chronicle recalls, the governor said he was not in favor of more laws limiting access to guns.
