Islamic extremists have killed more than 50 people in a terrorist attack in eastern Burkina Faso this week, AsiaNews reported this weekend.
The attack took place near the village of Maggioari, with a population of 15,000 to 20,000, last Wednesday, making it the bloodiest jihadist attack in the country since last year’s attack on Solhana in the northeast. 132 people.
According to Colonel Hubert Jameogo, the governor of the eastern region, residents of Maggioari trying to escape the jihadist blockade of their village were “targeted” at militants near the bridge, where they were shot.
One witness noticed that militants intercepted and then killed victims, all male.
Majoari is one of several cities under jihadist blockade in the north and east of Burkina Faso, including Djibo and Titao.
While the army sometimes brings supply convoys to these cities, failing to do so, the desperate residents that have lived in Maggioari for the past ten days often try to escape.
“Guterres strongly condemns the killing of approximately 50 people reported by extremist armed groups on 25 May in Majoari, eastern Burkina Faso,” said António Guterres, spokesman for the UN Secretary-General.
“The Secretary-General extends his condolences to the families of the victims and urges the Burkina Faso authorities to make every effort to identify those responsible and bring them to justice as soon as possible,” he said.
Jihadist attacks by al-Qaeda and Islamic State-affiliated groups have continued in northern and eastern Burkina Faso over the past seven years, killing more than 2,000 civilians and soldiers and displacing nearly 2 million people.
Maggioari was particularly hit. On May 14, Islamists attacked the city’s civilian population, killing seventeen and wounding seven. Five days later, gunmen attacked a military detachment at Maggioari, killing eleven soldiers and injuring twenty others.
