A bomb exploded in a crowded area in the center of Rangoon, the former capital of Myanmar, killing one person and injuring nine people, Myanmar police said, adding that sappers are investigating whether the explosion was caused by a grenade or a mine.

Photos released by local media show many bodies on the ground in a crowded area and bloodstains on the pavement. Later, security officials found an unexploded hand grenade near the explosion site. A local paramedic, who arrived at the scene of the explosion shortly after it occurred, indicated that “his team took two seriously injured people to the hospital.”

The Southeast Asian country is in disarray since last year’s coup, and civilian “People’s Defense Forces” have emerged to fight the ruling military faction, while defectors are also targeting officials or organizations believed to be dealing with the generals.
