Ukraine: Spain will extend crisis response measures for another three months

The Spanish Government is extend measures to respond to the impacts of the war in Ukraine on the economy for three monthsthat includes discounts on fuel and electricityannounced this Wednesday the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez.

The measures to respond to the crisis generated by the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24 were initially adopted until June 30 and will remain valid until September 30according to what the head of the Government told deputies and senators of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party, which he leads, according to sources cited by local media.

According to the same sources, Sánchez said that “the protection of Spanish families and companies” will continue with the measures that are in force, among which he highlighted the discount of 20 cents for each liter of fuel, the extension to millions of families of the subsidies and a 60% reduction in the tax on electricity bills.

Government sources quoted by the news agency EFE and the newspaper El País explained that a new decree will be approved that essentially contains the same measures currently in force.

The Spanish Government approved on March 29 the plan to respond to the economic impact of the war in Ukraine, for an amount of 16,000 million euros, of which 6,000 million correspond to direct aid and tax reductions and another 10,000 million to the creation of a credit guaranteed by the state.

Among the measures of this plan are discounts on fuel, the limitation of price increases in housing leases to 2% and the 15% increase in the minimum guaranteed income for the most vulnerable families.

Regarding business support measures, the plan includes a new line of credit guarantees amounting to 10,000 million euros to cover liquidity needs.

There is also a direct aid package of 362 million euros for the agricultural and livestock sector, and another of around 68 million for the fishing sector.

Sánchez asked the socialist deputies and senators for “a constant effort” of dialogue “with those who think differently” in order to pass laws that are a bet of the PSOE and the Executive, a coalition that brings together socialists and United We Can (far left).

According to him, what is at stake is a “social reform agenda” that requires “constant efforts” to dialogue with the opposition, because in this way the measures “will last over time.”

Among the specific measures you mention are laws related to LGTBI rights or financial consumer protection.
