The EU approves sanctions package but yields to pressure from Hungary and pardons the head of the Russian Orthodox Church

The European Union on Thursday approved the sixth package of sanctions on Russia for its military aggression against Ukraine, leaving the leader of the Russian Orthodox Church off the list of people subject to restrictive measures, under pressure from Hungary.

Following the political agreement reached by the Heads of State and Government of the 27 at the summit held on Monday and Tuesday in Brussels, the ambassadors of the Member States in Brussels gave “green light” for the sixth package of sanctions, whose central element is a progressive embargo on Russian oil importsannounced the French Presidency of the Council.

Although the sanctions package should not be published in an official newspaper until Friday, several European sources indicated that, after obtaining exceptions for Hungary regarding the oil embargo, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán also managed to get Russian Orthodox Patriarch Cyril removed. from the list of those sanctioned, who was part of a list of 58 more people to be sanctioned, proposed a month ago by the European Commission, and which also includes the colonel and commander of the military operation in Bucha, known as “Bucha Butcher ”.
