Ukraine grants citizenship to Russian journalist who denounced the war

Russian journalist Alexander Nevzorov, who fled the country after denouncing the Russian invasion of Ukraine, was granted Ukrainian citizenship. The news is advanced this Friday by Reuters, which quotes the adviser to the Ukrainian Interior Minister, Anton Gerashchenko.

Nevzorov, whose The YouTube channel has more than 1.9 million subscribers.confirmed that he was granted citizenship through a Telegram post, in which he called Russia’s war a crime.

The journalist and his wife, Lydia, who was also granted Ukrainian citizenship, left Russia in March. The Kremlin is trying to stop Nevzorov, accusing him of spreading false information about the war, which the Putin government describes as a “special military operation”.

In March, Moscow passed a law that establishes prison sentences of up to 15 years for anyone who knowingly spreads “false” information about the Russian military. The Kremlin launched an investigation into the journalist after Nevzorov accused Russian troops of shelling a maternity hospital in Mariupol.

“I can no longer be silent. What is happening in Mariupol is terrorism.”, Nevzorov wrote on Telegram, refers to Al Jazeera. “Is this what liberation is, when we kill hundreds of civilians to kill a dozen soldiers?”

Ukraine’s president signed a law in December that simplifies the acquisition of Ukrainian citizenship by Russians who are being persecuted in the country for political reasons.
