AR recommends the participation of national authorities in the investigation of war crimes. Only the PCP votes against

This Friday, the Assembly of the Republic approved a draft resolution that asks the national authorities to participate in the “international effort” to investigate, prosecute and condemn war crimes in Ukraine, with the only vote against the PCP.

The bill – presented by Livre and which received favorable votes from all parties except the PCP – determines that the parliament condemns the military invasion of Ukraine by Russia, expresses its solidarity with the people of Ukraine and welcomes to “the Russian citizen opposition”. “which, both in Russia itself and in the rest of the world, speaks out in favor of peace and courageously condemns the actions and authoritarian practices of this regime in the Russian Federation.”

the Parlament supports in this way “all the steps taken by international justice and, in particular, the International Criminal Court, to establish the responsibilities of the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, as well as others involved, in the war crimes committed on the territory of Ukraine, after the invasion”.

Ukraine will charge some 80 Russian war crimes suspects. There are a total of 600 identified

In the text, the Assembly of the Republic also resolves “to urge the national authorities to support the investigation of all war crimes perpetrated within the framework of this invasion, by regular military forces, paramilitaries or militias, of any of the the parties to the conflict, that is, to continue the efforts to collect evidence initiated by the Attorney General of the International Criminal Court, with the cooperation of 39 states, including Portugal”.

the Parlament It also instructs the Government “to remain active in the efforts of the international community so that new complaints can be made under article 14 of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, in particular in view of the new information coming from Bucha and Irpin and other Ukrainian territories from which the withdrawal of Russian troops will reveal new indications of atrocities” so that Vladimir Putin and other top Russian officials are put on trial for any crimes committed.

One of the points of a draft resolution of the Liberal Initiative was also approved, which recommends to the Government that, “within the appropriate diplomatic channels, namely, the European Council, the Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union and other formations of the Council of the European Union, actively advocate for the gradual embargo on gas imports from the Russian Federation”.

The European Union has decided to cut Russian oil imports by 90%. What impact could it have?

At this point, the PS abstained, voted against the PCP and the rest of the parties voted in favor.

The Liberals also wanted the Executive to program “the gradual elimination of all imports of Russian gas to Portugal, regardless of the position of the European Union in this regard”, but this point of the text ended ‘failed’ with the abstention of the PS and the votes against the PSD and PCP.
