An Indonesian army officer has been stripped of his military title after serving a life sentence for murder and removal of corpses in an attempt to cover up a case that has caused public outrage.
A man named Brianto held the title of Colonel before he was tried and deported from the military. Two of his assistants were with him in December when their vehicle collided with two teenagers (ages 17 and 14) riding a motorcycle in West Java state.
At the hearing in Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta, Priyanto admitted that he had the idea to remove the two bodies because he thought the youths were dead. However, some of the other witnesses, including a civilian who helped bring the victims in Brianto’s car to the scene, one of the teenagers was still moving and complaining of pain.
However, instead of taking him to the hospital, Brianto ordered his staff to put the two victims in the car and decided to throw the corpses into a large river so that the corpses would drift into the sea in the hope that they would not be found. . . .
The two bodies were found by local residents three days later in two separate rivers in the nearby state of Central Java. The forensic expert said there was water in Handi’s respiratory system, which showed he was still alive when he was thrown into the river.
