Russia: Ukraine must solve the problem of grain exports

Russia said on Wednesday that It is up to Ukraine to solve the problem of grain exports, as Moscow has already done everything possible.. Sergei Lavrov’s statements were made this morning at a press conference after a meeting between the foreign ministers of Turkey, Mevlut Cavusoglu and Russia, in Ankara (Turkey), which aimed to address precisely this issue of exports of grain from Ukrainian ports.

“To solve the problem, all that is needed is for the Ukrainians to let ships out of their ports, either by clearing them or defining safe corridors. Nothing more is needed,” the Russian minister was quoted as saying by Reuters, stressing that Moscow has said “on a daily basis that it is ready to guarantee the safety of ships.”

We are ready to do this in cooperation with our Turkish colleagues.”

Russia had already said that only Ukraine and the West could do something to guarantee the export of Ukrainian and Russian cereals, which have been blocked since the beginning of the war and are raising fears of a food crisis that could hit least developed countries especially.

The Turkish foreign minister considered “reasonable” the United Nations plans to open a corridor to resume grain exports in Ukrainebut he stressed that “more negotiations” are necessary to guarantee the safety of the ships.

Lavrov also addressed the issue of negotiations between Moscow and kyiv for a ceasefire, indicating that they will need to be resumed before there is a meeting between the leaders of the two countries, Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin. The minister also considered that the “special military operation”, a term used by the Kremlin to refer to the war in Ukraine, is progressing as planned.

It is estimated that about 22 million tons of grain are blocked in Ukraine due to the warsince Russia is blocking the Black Sea and the Ukrainian ports are full of mines that were placed there to prevent the landing of Russian troops.
