Fire in southern Spain injures three firefighters and forces 2,000 people to evacuate

The city of Benahavís, in southern Spain, was evacuated due to a large fire that has been raging since Wednesday afternoon in the mountainous region of Sierra Bermeja. Three people were injured fighting the flames and 2,000 were evacuated from their homes as the fire grew closer.

The fire has occurred in the Pujerra mountain, on the Costa del Sol, the Andalusian Forest Fire Department has specified through social networks. High temperatures and strong wind may have been the origin of the fire, admit the firefighters.

All three victims are firefighters who suffered burns while fighting the fire. One of them has injuries to 25% of his body and is being treated at a hospital in Malaga. The other two have burns with “different levels of severity”.

Two hundred firefighters from Benahavís, 50 firefighters from other municipalities of the Costa do Sol and 100 military personnel are fighting the flames. Some of the people evacuated from Benahavís are housed in a camp prepared by the authorities, but most are staying with family and friends, specifies Reuters.
