Democratic Congressman Benny Thompson, chairman of the U.S. House investigative committee, said Thursday that the attack on the Capitol was “the culmination of a coup attempt.”
It came as Thompson presented his first results about former President Donald Trump’s role in the January 6, 2021 attack.
Thompson said that that day, protesters stormed the U.S. Capitol with Trump’s “courage.”
He said the “conspiracy” behind the attack posed a “permanent threat to democracy” and was not over.

The head of the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry, which investigated the raids on the Capitol building in Washington, said the “conspiracy” behind the attack posed a “persistent threat to democracy” and had not ended until now.
“Democracy is still at stake,” said Democratic Representative Benny Thompson, who led the investigation.
“His plan to thwart the will of the people is not over. There are power -hungry people in this country… a lack of love and respect for what makes America great. ”
This comes in prepared comments released Thursday ahead of the first summer hearings in the January 2021 attack on the Capitol by supporters of former U.S. President Donald Trump.
It is noteworthy that the attack on the Capitol building resulted in several deaths, and it happened on the day that members of Congress would meet to confirm the results of the presidential election, which Trump refused to admit defeat.
