North Korean state media reported on Saturday that North Korea had appointed a woman foreign minister for the first time in its history.
According to North Korea’s official news agency, former Deputy Foreign Minister Choi Sun Hui was elected Foreign Minister during a meeting of the ruling party led by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
According to AFP, Sun Hui will replace Rey Sun Gwen, a former hardline military official who led the talks with South Korea.
Sun Hui, an English-speaking diplomat, was Kim’s close adviser during the nuclear talks with the United States and accompanied the North Korean leader on summit meetings with former US President Donald Trump.
On the eve of the collapse of the Hanoi meeting between the two leaders in February 2019, Sun Hui held a rare Q&A session with reporters, then blamed Washington, saying, “I think the United States missed a golden opportunity by rejecting us. Offers.”
Since then, diplomacy between Pyongyang and Washington has stalled, and the North Korean regime has not responded to Washington’s proposals to return to the negotiating table in recent months.
In the past few weeks, North Korea has conducted several missile tests, including launching the largest intercontinental ballistic missile.
Pyongyang has stepped up efforts to improve its weapons program this year, despite tough economic sanctions and warnings from the United States and South Korea that the Kim Jong Un regime may conduct its seventh nuclear test.
