Ukraine has called for urgent humanitarian assistance to fight the spread of infectious diseases, which has added to its deplorable situation in the face of months of widespread Russian aggression.
Mariupol Mayor Vadim Boychenko, who now works outside the southern port city, said health systems had deteriorated and “bodies were rotting in the streets.”
Mariupol has been broken after a siege that lasted nearly three months and is now completely under Russian control.
“There is an outbreak of dysentery and cholera. Unfortunately, this is our doctors’ assessment of the situation. The war, which has killed more than 20,000 residents, will unfortunately kill thousands more in Mariupol because of the outbreak,” Buchenko added. “
Bloody diarrhea is an infectious disease that affects the intestines, especially the large intestine, and is associated with severe bloody or mucous diarrhea caused by a bacterial or amoebic infection.
Cholera is a bacterial disease that is usually transmitted through contaminated water and causes diarrhea and severe dehydration.
The local official called on the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross to allow other people to leave the city to establish a humanitarian corridor.
Mariupol was one of Russia’s targets in the war, especially the Azofestal steel plant, where thousands of Ukrainian fighters and civilians were detained for months before it was completely captured by the Russians.
