Romanian Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu indicated that “Romania needs to increase the number of NATO soldiers who will stay in the country for a long time”, noting that “a more stable presence is needed, although I can say that at the moment, if you look at the presence of allies in Romania , we already have more than 5,000 soldiers on Romanian soil. We are interested in a long-term presence on the eastern side, in a formula that clearly needs to be measured not only by the number of troops in Romania, but also by many other parameters (Increase in the number of soldiers and the duration of their stay in Romania ).
He pointed out to Digi 24 that “the process of forming a battle group in Romania officially began on the first of May last year.” The authorities hope that it will be completed before the end of this year. “It will depend on how fast we move and what kind of allies are in this battle group,” he said.
Earlier, US President Joe Biden confirmed that the US does not intend to reduce its military presence in Europe. On the contrary, Washington plans to increase the number of troops in Romania and other countries in the event of an escalation around Ukraine. For his part, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis welcomed the words of the US President regarding the increase in the number of American troops in Europe, including in Romania.
