Elizabeth II already has the second longest reign in history

Elizabeth II has just broken another record. The queen may have mobility issues, but she’s still racking up achievements. These days she became the monarch with the second longest reign in history.

The sovereign equaled last Sunday the number of days that King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand was on the throne, explains the BBC, 70 years and 126 days. And on June 13, his reign became the second longest in history.

The longest reign in history belongs (still) to King Louis XIV of France, who lasted 72 years and 110 days. However, it is important to remember that the young prince became king when he was only four years old and, according to the BBC, he only began to reign after the age of 20, in 1661. For Elizabeth II to break this record, she will have to be queen in May 2024.

In 2015, the queen had already beaten Queen Victoria’s long reign, at 63 years, 7 months and 2 days, becoming the longest-living monarch in the United Kingdom. The Platinum Jubilee celebrations earlier this month announced to the world that Elizabeth II has been queen for 70 years and she ascended the throne on February 6, 1952, when her father died.
