Former captain of the Russian national team Igor Denisov says that the war in Ukraine is a “catastrophe”: “Maybe they will kill me for saying this”

Former Russian soccer player Igor Denisov criticized Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Wednesday, calling it a “catastrophe”, a “disaster” and “complete horror”. In an interview with the YouTube channel Nobel, the former captain of the Russian soccer team revealed that he was “a little scared” by what he might happen to him after making his position on the war public.

“I am not sure if I will go to prison or be killed, but I am speaking my mind”said Igor Denisov, who assured that, despite fearing reprisals, “he will not hide”: “I will not leave Russia. I’m not going anywhere because I don’t want to.”

Revealing that he has had sleepless nights due to the war, the former Russian national team captain said he did not understand why Russia invaded Ukraine. “Maybe because I don’t know much, maybe because I don’t know much about history, but I don’t know”found, noting, however, that he is “against the death of people.”

At the beginning of the conflict, Igor Denisov wanted to post a video on his social networks showing his position on the war, addressing Russian President Vladimir Putin directly. However, his friends advised him against it, claiming that no one would care what his opinion was.

The former soccer player maintains the conviction that the war must come to an end, being “willing to kneel in front” of Vladimir Putin to end any conflict.

The Russian parliament recently passed a law that does not allow the spread of misinformation about the status of what it says is the special military operation in Ukraine. Anyone who does so risks a prison sentence of up to 15 years.
