City shaken by ethnic feud between Turkish and Afghan Uber Eats drivers

A city outside of Paris has seen ethnic clashes between Turkish and Afghan Uber Eats drivers, and there have been two fights between groups of migrant drivers this month.

The first clash between the two groups of immigrants broke out on June 10 in the city of Mantes-la-Joli in the suburbs of Paris, followed by a second fight the next day between about 20 immigrants of Afghan and Turkish origin.

The second quarrel took place outside a local barbecue just after 8:45 pm, and about a dozen people, armed with helmets and crutches, rushed to the restaurant where both sides were arguing, despite the efforts of the police, Actu reported.

The police tried to maintain order through warning shots and police dogs, but in the end it took the presence of three police cars to calm the situation. There have been multiple arrests, including two Afghans working as Uber Eats drivers who told police they were there to avenge a fight that occurred the previous day.

“I hit someone who wanted to hit me with a crutch. Actually, I was just there to pick up the package,” an Afghan citizen told police.

“I ate on the terrace with a friend. We ordered our food and waited. A fight broke out. It was very fast. But I have nothing to do with these guys. What if I hit someone? Yes, this is inappropriate behavior. A blow to the anger of what I received, ”the third man who participated in the riot told investigators.

On Tuesday, local prosecutors sought six-month suspended sentences for two Afghans for their participation in the uprising and a €500 fine for the third arrested. The court accepted the demands of the prosecutor’s office and made a decision.

Immigrants make up the majority of those working as food delivery drivers for companies like Uber Eats and other services in France and elsewhere in Europe. It has been determined that illegal immigrants who do not have a work permit in France also work as courier drivers. According to a report from neighboring Belgium, the majority of drivers in Brussels are illegals.

Earlier in April this year, Uber Eats, Deliveroo and Fritchti agreed to a contract proposed by the French government to establish a policy to prevent those who illegally use their platform and others from using the platform to exploit the illegal.
