Israel announced on Saturday that its air defense system had intercepted a rocket fired from the Gaza Strip towards the city of Ascalon, and that it was striking targets in the Gaza Strip in response. Local officials said there were no injuries or damage in what was the first attack launched from Gaza since April, the Times of Israel reported.
“Terrorists have just fired a rocket from Gaza into southern Israel. The rocket was intercepted in the air by the Air Defense Corps,” the Israel Defense Forces said on Twitter.
Israel has also announced that it has begun attacking targets in the Gaza Strip in response, although no further details have been provided so far.
An Israeli military strike in the West Bank city of Jenin on Friday, in which three Palestinians were killed and eight others wounded, may have triggered the rocket attack from Gaza, according to The Jerusalem Post.
