Germany will take urgent measures to ensure security of supply in the face of reduced Russian gas deliveries, in particular by reinforcing the use of coal-fired power plants for electricity production, the government announced today.
“To reduce gas consumption, less has to be used for electricity production. Alternatively, coal plants will have to be used more,” the Economy Ministry said in a statement today.
Russian gas exports to Europe have been steadily declining since sanctions against Russia began in response to the invasion of Ukraine. Gazprom stopped its gas deliveries to several European customers who refused to pay in rubles.
About half of the foreign companies that signed a gas supply contract with Gazprom opened an account in rubles with Gazprombank to guarantee their payments, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexandre Novak said in mid-May, quoted by the Ria-news agency. Novosti.
