poll. Putin’s approval rating falls to record lows outside Russia: 90% do not trust the Russian president

A survey of 18 countries (a list that does not include Portugal) shows that Vladimir Putin’s approval rating has fallen to record lows outside of Russia. 90% of those surveyed say that they do not trust the words of the Russian president. “Among 18 nations, a median of 90% of those surveyed say they do not trust Putin to do the right thing in world affairs and 78% express ‘do not trust'”, says the study by the US think tank PewResearch.

The president’s approval rating varies by country. The Poles trust Putin the least (97%), followed by the Swedes (95%), the Dutch (94%), the Spanish (94%) and the Belgians (90%). The only exception in the list of negative evaluations received by the Russian leader in this study is Malaysia, a country in which 59% of those surveyed approve of Vladimir Putin’s actions. “Over the last two decades, Putin’s approval has been on a downward trend in many countries.but in 2022 these numbers hit historic lows in all countries”, refers to the study published this Wednesday.

The view of many countries of Russia is also affected. “A median of 85% among 18 countries expresses an unfavorable opinion of Russia with the majority of nations saying that they have a very unfavorable opinion of Russia”, underlines the survey. The Poles prevail as those with the most negative perception of Russia (97%), as do the Swedes (94%), the Dutch (91%) and the Spanish (87%). Once again, Malaysia is an exception, although opinions are divided: 50% do not welcome Moscow’s performance.

As for other world leaders, the opinion of those surveyed is more positive. The leader they trust the most to do the right thing is French President Emmanuel Macron (62%). The US head of state follows him and is trusted by 60% of those surveyed, while German Chancellor Olaf Scholz retains 59%. “Confidence in Macron, who was re-elected, remained stable in most countries,” highlights the study, which also notes that “trust in Scholz is much lower than that placed in former German Chancellor Angela Merkel.”

like vladimir putin respondents from 18 countries do not trust the Chinese president’s statements. Only 18% of those surveyed approve of Xi Jinping’s performance, although the approval rate is higher in Asian countries such as Malaysia or Singapore.

The survey also shows that the image of the United States abroad is generally positive: “A median of 61% of the population of the 17 countries surveyed have a positive view of the United States, while 35% have a negative view.” Even so, divergences continue to exist even within Europe. While 91% of Poles, 66% of Swedes and 64% of Britons see Washington with eyesin countries such as Greece (48%), Belgium (56%) and France (57%) this percentage is lower.

The opinion poll was conducted from February 14 to May 11 in 18 countries (United States, Canada, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, Israel, Australia, Japan , Malaysia, Singapore, and South Korea) and received a response from 23,484 people.
