The US Senate passed a bill Friday night with the support of lawmakers from both parties that is set to counter the wave of armed violence in the United States.
The new bill includes restrictions on access to firearms and billions of dollars in funding for mental health and school safety.
The bill passed the Senate with 65 votes in favor and 33 against, and it is almost certain that it will be approved in the House of Representatives on Friday, but it is much less than the measures required by President Joe Biden.
Nevertheless, the project sets a precedent for decades and represents a breakthrough for arms control proponents.
The ruling comes hours after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Thursday that citizens have the right to bear arms, a historic decision with far-reaching implications for states and cities across the country that are witnessing escalating gun violence.
The decision repeals New York State law, passed more than a century ago, which required a legitimate need or “good reason” to obtain a firearms license in public.
Despite increased demands for gun control following two horrific shootings in May, the camp court ruled that the US Constitution guarantees the right to own and carry weapons without restriction.
