The 11-year-old girl who became pregnant as a result of rape in Brazil managed to abort in a public hospital in the country, after weeks of indecision due to a judge’s refusal to authorize the procedure.
The Polydoro Ernani University Hospital of São Thiago, in the city of Florianópolis (south), “took all the necessary measures to interrupt the girl’s pregnancy”according to a note from the Public Ministry of the Federation.
Sources from the Public Ministry added that the procedure was carried out “Wednesday night” and that the girl, who is still in the clinic, “is fine.”
The case gained prominence this week after The Intercept Brasil website reported on the content of the hearing in which a judge, with the support of the regional prosecutor, pressured the girl to have the baby and give it up for adoption.
The judge argued that giving the green light to an abortion at this stage of the pregnancy would be “homicide”, even though the victim had a right to it.and also ordered that the girl be placed in a foster home to prevent her from aborting.

In Brazil, abortion is currently only allowed in cases of risk to the mother, rape or fetuses with anencephaly.
The case ended up in the hands of the courts after the Florianópolis hospital refused to interrupt the girl’s pregnancy at first, for violating its internal protocols.
However, the Federal Public Ministry recommended the day before to the hospital that it comply with the law and interrupt the pregnancy of the minor, who was about to enter the 29th week of gestation.
