The commander of the British army said that his country and its allies were facing “a moment from 1937” after the start of the Russia-Ukraine war.
And according to Sky News on Tuesday, General Patrick Sanders said that everything possible should be done to prevent a third world war.
Sanders came to power last May, and his first message to British troops was the need to prepare for a possible confrontation with Russia in a possible third world war.
A few days after the message, Sanders reiterated his warning about the possibility of a devastating war with Russia.
The warning comes as British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to announce a significant increase in military spending amid growing security challenges.
“Russian President Vladimir Putin and his expansionist ambitions are the greatest threat to sovereignty and democracy,” Sanders told the media, which is scheduled to be presented at the annual military conference later today.
Gen. Sanders is expected to say his top priority will be “mobilizing the military to help prevent the spread of war within Europe by preparing for battle and winning side by side with NATO allies.”
The head of the British army will speak at “Moment 1937”, a crucial period before the outbreak of World War II, which began between 1939 and 1945.
In 1937, the expansionist ambitions of the Nazi leader, Adolf Hitler, emerged as he sought to annex Austria, before embracing other countries with the outbreak of war in 1939.
“We are not at war, but we must act quickly to thwart the expansion of the region,” the British general was quoted as saying, referring to Western accusations of Putin’s expansionism.
According to Sky News, the new challenge means that the British military must be modernized, new technologies such as electronic warfare and long-range missiles must be deployed and the soldier must retain his traditional skills.
