The opposition leader of the Brazilian Senate told the Lusa news agency that “it is sad” that the Brazilian president behaved “like a spoiled brat” when he canceled the meeting with the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
“It is sad, unfortunate and shameful for all Brazilians to have a President of the Republic who instead of behaving at the height of the magistracy of the position he occupies, he is more like a spoiled brat“, Randolfe Rodrigues said in statements to the Lusa agency.
The leader of the opposition to the Bolsonaro government in the Federal Senate and president of the Special Curative Commission of the Senate for the Bicentennial of the Independence of Brazil left an apology to the Portuguese.
On behalf of the Brazilian people, I want to apologize to the President of Portugal, to the authorities of the sister country and to the Portuguese people”, he said.
Randolfe Rodrigues, who coordinates former President Lula da Silva’s campaign for the October presidential elections, also promised that he will do everything possible to “guarantee all Portuguese” that “this time of shame” has “the days numbered”.
Jair Bolsonaro told CNN Brazil on Friday that he had decided to cancel the lunch between the two, which he justified by the fact that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will meet this Sunday with Lula da Silva.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will only go to Brasilia if Bolsonaro confirms the lunch in writing, until the afternoon (in São Paulo)
These statements by Randolfe Rodrigues arise shortly after the chef of State, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, has announced this Sunday that he will go to Brasília to meet with the Brazilian President, Jair Bolsonaro, and he is going to reschedule his agenda in São Paulo.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was speaking to journalists at the end of a breakfast with former Brazilian President Lula da Silva, at the official residence of the Portuguese Consul General in São Paulo, which lasted about an hour and 45 minutes.
Asked whether or not he will travel to Brasilia this Sunday at the end of the day to meet with Bolsonaro on Monday, he replied: “There was a written invitation, I accepted in writing. Since there is no written confirmation, this means that I will, in fact, stay on the original schedule.” And he added: “There is no drama of any kind.”
The President of the Republic pointed out that the initial program of his visit to Brazil only included Rio de Janeiro, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the air crossing of the South Atlantic, and São Paulo, on the occasion of the Bienal do Livro. Then came Jair Bolsonaro’s invitation to go to Brasilia.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa indicated that he will still wait “until the beginning of the afternoon” for a possible “written confirmation” from the Presidency of Brazil on this meeting and that, if he does not arrive, his program “stays in São Paulo, as it always was in the beginning”.
The head of state said that he is already adding points to his agenda in São Paulo in the time he will have until he travels back to Portugal: “I am already rescheduling. I’m on plan A, which was later replaced by plan B. We’re back to plan A.”
“It is clear that Plan A is always preferable,” he said.
Until now, it was officially open whether or not Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa would travel to Brasilia this Sunday at the end of the day, for a meeting followed by lunch with the president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, at the Itamaraty Palace, on Monday.
The Portuguese president repeatedly devalued this episode and said that he was waiting for an eventual written communication from his counterpart.
Bolsonaro will run for office again in the presidential elections scheduled for October 2, in which he will face Lula da Silva.
