US President Joe Biden today began the process for the US Congress to consider the membership of Finland and Sweden in NATO.
In a statement, the White House announced that Joe Biden has already submitted a report on Finland and another on Sweden. (in which its integration into NATO is analyzed) to various commissions of the US Congress.
This will be just a first step, with no set date for Congress to ratify the NATO accession protocol that Finland and Sweden are expected to sign on July 5.
The majority of the Democrats and Republicans in the United States Congress support the integration of these two Scandinavian countries into that organization.so the process is expected to run smoothly.
Final ratification of the protocol could come before the August holidays, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said during a visit to Finland’s capital Helsinki in May.
During the NATO summit, which took place in Madrid, the organization’s leaders agreed to invite Finland and Sweden to join the alliance, with the signing of the protocol on July 5 serving solely to formalize the agreement.
This integration is motivated by the war in Ukraine, which led these two countries, with a tradition of neutrality in the international arena, to request their integration into NATO.
The process ended up getting complicated, given the blockades created by Turkey, which considered these two states to be negligent in dealing with the organizations that Ankara classifies as terrorists.
However, it was possible to reach an agreement, after concessions from the Scandinavian states.
These concessions raise serious concerns about the possibility of extradition of the Kurdish community and opponents of the Turkish regime residing in those two countries.
