The Presidium of France (Champs Elysees) said that French President Emmanuel Macron sent a message to his Algerian counterpart Abdelmajid Tebbun, congratulating him on the 60th anniversary of Algeria’s independence from France.

In her statement, she explained that today a wreath will be laid in the name of Macron at the national memorial of the Algerian war and battles in Morocco and Tunisia, on the Quai Branly in Paris, noting that “the 60th anniversary of Algeria’s declaration of independence on July 5, 2022 gives the President of the Republic the opportunity send to Tabun our wishes to the Algerian people and express our hope for the further strengthening of the already strong relations between France and Algeria.

The President quoted Macron, who “reaffirms his commitment to continue the process of recognition of the truth and reconciliation in the name of the memory of the Algerian and French peoples.”

Although six decades have passed since the withdrawal of French troops, relations between Paris and Algiers have not yet reached their normality, despite Macron’s efforts after his election to assuage the memory with a number of symbolic initiatives that have not reached the moment of “apology”.

It is noteworthy that after an eight-year war between the Algerian revolutionaries and the French army, hostilities ceased after the signing on March 18, 1962, July of the same year.
