“I have decided that it is in the interests of the party and the country to announce my departure,” British Prime Minister Boris Johnson told the chairman of the Conservative Party committee.

British media reported that Johnson had agreed to step down and called for a new leader of the Conservative Party to be appointed at the October conference. In turn, the BBC reported that “the British Prime Minister will make a statement within a few hours.”

The wave of resignations from the government began on Tuesday and reached more than 55 ministers, ministers of state and assistant ministers today in protest of Johnson’s inability to step down amid a series of scandals that have plagued him in recent weeks.

The most recent resignation was that of Education Secretary Michelle Donelan two days after her inauguration. She was preceded at this stage by Secretary of State for Security and Border Affairs Damian Hinds, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Brandon Lewis and Secretary of State for Wales Simon Hart.

Notably, the wave of resignations began on Tuesday with Treasury Secretary Rishi Sunak and Health Minister Sajid Javid tendering their resignations from their posts for refusing to keep Johnson in the leadership of the party and government.

Earlier, Johnson fired Housing and Local Government Secretary Michael Gove amid the latter’s demands that Johnson resign from his post due to scandals that have plagued the prime minister in recent weeks.
