The majority of citizens of 28 countries in the world (54%) accept receiving more Ukrainian refugees, but are not as open to receiving refugees of other nationalities, according to a report by Ipsos, an international market research firm. Only citizens of Saudi Arabia and Malaysia would accept more Syrian refugees than Ukrainians.
Comparatively, only 32% of citizens would accept receiving more Syrian refugees in their country, 30% would accept Venezuelan refugees and 30% would accept Afghans.
Among the citizens interviewed, 15% refuse to accept more Ukrainian refugees, but the scenario is worse for other refugees: 32% reject refugees from Afghanistan, 30% from Syria and 30% from South Sudan.
Among the 28 countries studied, there are Swedes are the most open to receiving refugees from Ukraine (73%), followed by Brazilians (69%) and North Americans (67%). In other countries, such as Hungary (43%), Turkey (31%) or China (26%), less than half of the respondents agree to receive more Ukrainian refugees.
Interesting in these results is that the Dutch (35%) and the Swedes (33%) are the ones who most believe that refugees should be accepted depending on the region where they are; Y the Japanese (19%) and South Koreans (18%) are the ones who most believe that countries do not have to accept refugees — although many more, 45% and 37% respectively, believe that refugees should be welcome in all countries.
Turkey, the country that received the most displaced people in the world, is one of the countries with the fewest citizens that accepts Ukrainian refugees or any other nationality.
For this study, more than 20,000 adults in 28 countries on different continents were interviewed. Portugal was not part of this survey.
