Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was killed after he was shot during a speech in the city of Nara on Friday morning, Japanese television reported.
Abe, 67, was giving a speech outside the train station when shots were fired, Japan Broadcasting Corporation said.
The former Japanese prime minister was taken to hospital unconscious after suffering a heart attack, while Japanese media reported that he did not show any vital signs after the attack.
The Japanese broadcaster confirmed that the assailant shot Abe in the back with a rifle and that he was immediately arrested and revealed to be a former member of Japan’s Marine Self-Defense Force who had used an improvised rifle.
Japanese media reported that Shinzo Abe’s shooter told police he was upset with him and wanted to kill him, but that it was not motivated by hatred of his political views.
