The British newspaper The Independent reported that newly appointed finance minister and former education minister Nazim Al-Zahavi announced the start of his attempt to lead the Conservative Party and present himself as an alternative to Boris Johnson.

Al-Zahavi is the second minister in the Johnson government to show his ambition to lead the Conservative Party and form a new government after Transportation Secretary Grant Shapps held the general election.

Shapps explained that he will work to launch an emergency budget and direct his government to reduce personal taxes for the most vulnerable groups, and will also work to support companies with high levels of energy consumption.

On Friday, former Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak officially announced his candidacy for the leadership of the Conservative Party and the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom to replace Johnson.
