Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized on Monday that no power or country in the world should have any illusions about the possibility of Taiwan’s separation from China.
He added: If the principle of one China is violated, severe storms will occur in the Taiwan Strait.
Addressing the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) secretariat in Jakarta, the Indonesian capital, Wang said many countries in the region are under pressure to take sides in a region that is at risk of being “transformed by political factors.”
China’s foreign minister called on Southeast Asian countries to refrain from being used as chess pieces by big powers.
He explained: We must separate this region from geopolitical calculations and use it as chess pieces due to the competition between great powers and coercion.
He added: The future of our region must be in our hands.
Tensions are rising between China and the United States over autonomous Taiwan, which Beijing considers part of its territory and has vowed to annex it by force if necessary.
Beijing has launched dozens of attacks on Taiwan’s air defense zone this year, with Defense Minister Wei Feng warning his American counterpart on Friday that China is ready to go to war if the island declares independence.
