Micronesia, the last country in the world with more than 100,000 people, may have been infected with the coronavirus.
For more than two and a half years, Micronesia, an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean, has been able to contain the spread of the virus thanks to its geographic isolation and border controls.
Tourists in Micronesia did not spread the virus because they had to undergo strict quarantine.
But like many other Pacific nations this year, these measures failed to stop the rapidly spreading omicron mutant from reaching the country.
On Tuesday, the government said it was aware of multiple injuries in two of the country’s four states.
Officials said 25 people in Kosrae state had tested positive after being taken to a local hospital, and seven people were injured in Pohnpei state.
And state leaders urged all residents to “avoid gatherings and wear masks at all times.”
The outbreak comes less than two weeks before Micronesia plans to end quarantine restrictions and reopen its borders to the world on August 1.
For the past year, Micronesia has been one of the few countries to require all eligible citizens to receive the vaccine and has threatened to withhold funding for any citizen or employer who does not comply, so the country has has registered a significant for vaccination.
