The British government has given the green light to the new Sizewell C nuclear power plant in the east of the UK, which authorities say will produce low-carbon electricity for six million homes.

The government hopes that building the 3,200 megawatt power plant will help it meet its goal of achieving zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Last January, British ministers announced that the government would invest an additional £100 million ($120 million) to support the development of the project. The additional funds are also intended to attract new partners to the Electricité de France’s Sizewell Sea project located on the Savik coast.

Britain has 15 nuclear reactors at eight sites across the country, but many of them are nearing the end of their lives.
