The French government is redoubling its efforts to reduce energy consumption due to rising energy prices and the lingering effects of the Russian-Ukrainian crisis.

“The government’s energy saving plan includes a ban on illuminated advertising at night, except at train stations and airports, and a ban on shops keeping their doors open when the air conditioning or heating is turned on,” said France’s transitional energy minister. Agnes Pannier-Runashe.

“These measures will help companies cut their energy bills by 20 percent,” the minister explained in an interview with the Journal du Dimanche.

Earlier this month, French President Emmanuel Macron stressed the importance of reducing energy consumption, noting that “Russia is using gas as a weapon of war, and today we must prepare for a scenario in which we will have to completely abandon Russian gas.”

Macron urged “citizens and local administrations to develop contingency plans in the summer to avoid a crisis in the winter” as Europe grapples with the worst energy crisis in decades.
