The US Department of Justice is investigating former US President Donald Trump as part of its criminal investigation into his “attempts to reverse his 2020 election defeat,” The Washington Post reported Wednesday, citing sources.
The Justice Department is hearing statements from former White House officials, including former Vice President Mike Pence’s chief of staff.
On Monday, Pence confirmed that he will testify before a federal grand jury investigating the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol and efforts by Trump and his allies to turn his defeat into a victory.
Prosecutors questioning witnesses before the grand jury have asked about conversations with Trump, his lawyer and others close to the former president, the newspaper reported, citing two sources familiar with the matter.
The testimony of Mark Short, Pence’s former chief of staff and the highest-ranking official to appear before a grand jury to date, is a sign that the Justice Department’s investigation into the attack on Congress is accelerating.
The newspaper also reported that Justice Department investigators also obtained phone recordings of senior officials in April. Among them is Mark Meadows, Trump’s former chief of staff.
