US courts block abortion ban in Wyoming and North Dakota

US judges on Wednesday temporarily blocked an abortion ban that was due to take effect this week in Wyoming and North Dakota, arguing the move violates state law.

In Wyoming, a judge stood next to a burned down women’s health clinic and a group of people arguing that the ban would harm health professionals and patients. In North Dakota, a magistrate expressed support for the state’s only abortion clinic, the Red River Women’s Clinic in Fargo.

Anti-abortion laws were due to go into effect in Wyoming and North Dakota on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.

However, in West Virginia, deputies advances with the prohibition of the voluntary interruption of pregnancy amid the protests.

During the hours of debate, which led to the approval of the legislation by 69 votes in favor and 23 against, in a chamber dominated by Republicans, anti-abortion chants and shouts were heard outside.

“Face us,” the crowd yelled.

The suspension of the new legislation in North Dakota and Wyoming places the states among several others (Kentucky, Louisiana, and Utah) where judges have temporarily blocked implementation of these laws while court proceedings take place.

On June 24, the Supreme Court of Justice, with a conservative majority, abolished the constitutional right to abortion, in force throughout the country since 1973, which triggered a wave of illegalizations in the most conservative half of the country.

Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden has signed an executive order to ensure women can cross state lines to get abortions where it is legal.
