Andy Bashir, Governor of the U.S. state of Kentucky, said at least 37 people, including four children, have died as a result of flooding caused by heavy rains in the east of the state, and warned of the approach of more dangerous weather conditions.

Bashir confirmed seven additional deaths in an update that came after the announcement of 30 confirmed deaths yesterday morning and said he expected the death toll to rise.

The authorities continued to work to save the population and provide food and shelter for thousands of displaced people.

In a video posted to social media, Bashir spoke about the weather forecast, saying, “It’s a really tricky thing… sporadic flooding and destructive winds are possible.”

The floods are the second major disaster in Kentucky in seven months, after a large number of tornadoes killed about 80 people in December in the western part of the state.

And US President Joe Biden announced that Kentucky had been hit by a major disaster, allowing the state to receive federal funding.
