North Korea is dismantling South Korean-built facilities at the Mount Kumgang resort, a place known to be a “reconciliation” point between the two Koreas, which once operated a joint tourism program.
An official from the Seoul Unification Ministry told CNN that Fseveral have been identifieddecommissioning activities” on Mt.. The man added that one of the buildings that was dismantled includes the Hyundai Asan office.
The South Korean company’s office was tasked with managing the tourist area on Mount Kumgang, having served to “enhance inter-Korean reconciliation” by serving as a “crucial point for exchange” between countries, Hyundai spokesman Park Sung-uk said.
Another of the buildings that began to be dismantled in April was the Haegumgang Hotel, the first floating hotel in the world. The luxury resort was built in Australia but moved to Kumgang in 2000 after being bought by the multinational car company.
The decommissioning work presumably began in March with the dismantling of the Haegumgang Hotel. In April it was the turn of the dismantling of the Ananti Golf Resort. Supposedly, North Korea’s strategy is to replace all structures on Mount Kumgang and control the area without South Korean support.
