Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin confirmed Wednesday that Washington will continue to provide military support to Ukraine against a Russian attack, noting that the United States is leading a 50-nation coalition to provide military support to Ukraine.
The comments come two days after the World Bank announced a $4.5 billion U.S. aid package to Ukraine, noting that the support will help the service and pension purse, which is essential to mitigate the effects of the war’s aftermath.
US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said, “This economic aid is necessary to support the people of Ukraine in defending their democracy against Russia’s unjustified war of aggression.”
Most of the money under the aid will be disbursed this month and is part of an $8.5 billion U.S. support package to help the Ukrainian government keep hospitals, schools and other essential government services available to the people of Ukraine.
Notably, Ukraine suffers from a public budget deficit that increases by $5 billion every month, exacerbated by its inability to raise funds or finance from foreign markets.
Ukraine’s allies rushed to offer aid, with the Group of Seven and the European Union pledging an additional $29.6 billion in aid to Kyiv.
