The Spanish government has asked for support from its German counterpart to complete a long-planned gas pipeline that runs across its northern border with France and from there to the countries of Central Europe.

Spanish Environment Minister Teresa Ribera said in a statement that “Germany should be involved in the talks on the pipeline, which runs in the Austalrich area of Spain, about 106 kilometers from the border with France.” clarified that “at the same time, the French side will have to complete about 120 kilometers of the project.”

On Thursday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz backed the completion of the project, which was abandoned in 2017, citing the fallout from Russia’s military operation in Ukraine and a sharp cut in Russian gas supplies to his country, widely seen as the result of sanctions West over Moscow.

The Medcat gas pipeline is designed to transport gas from Spain and Portugal through the Pyrenees mountain range to the French city of Berberian for gas supplies to Central Europe.
